Film and Tv Jobs

Focuses On:

  • Location Issues
  • Pay Rates
  • Career Paths
  • Opportunities

General Overview: Working in Film and Tv as a photographer your role would be usually to document either the makings of a Tv show or Film that shows the behind the scenes as well as shots that made the final cut, for either advertising or the commercial companies archive that hired you in the first place. However, you may not want to be a photographer working in the Film and Tv industry but an equipment manager or assistant, taking care of all the very expensive equipment and getting it to and from locations and studios. All of these jobs involve a lot of late nights, early mornings travelling to locations and studios.

Locations: As a commercial photographer in the Film and Tv industry you will be mainly asked to either sort out your own travel to and from the various locations for shooting, or if you are very lucky and hired by a company that has a lot of income/ funds to spend you may have travel provided for you. If you choose to work within a studio setting you may find that majority of these are based in much larger cities for example: London, Manchester, or Glasgow. It will involve some travelling if you live outside the major populated areas which can be a negative for some people. However, there are lots of opportunities within should you be willing to travel and hunt around. On the other hand, there are some roles that may be better suited for people that live away from these studios, sets, etc. For example, some designers for websites, outfits and even running some of the technology can be done from home or another location off studio site.

Pay Rates: At the moment photographers working in the Film and Tv industry on average earn between $33,000 and $55,500. All of which comes down to experience, skills you provide to the company and ultimately who it is you will be working for, whether it’s a large-scale company or something a bit smaller.

Career Paths/ Opportunities: Like most things being a part of a large commercial organisation, it allows you to meet a variety of different clients through working on sets with actors and other individuals from directors and photographers. However, by building up connections it is the most important part when trying to progress in the industry. It will allow you to work with other individuals and companies that have worked with the clients you are working with. All of which can be vital in a career in the Film and Tv industry.

Ethics and Photography Research

In photography ethics can play a very vital role in how individuals produce and create work due to restraints, whether that is legal or classed as a gentleman's agreement amongst other members of the art world. The thing is ethics can be very broad and can incorporate a bunch of different factors about copyright, types of subjects used, ethnicities and a whole range of other variables.  For starters the main issue that causes a lot of tension between artists is the fact that many can copy a piece of work directly or indirectly. Meaning they might copy a very small part such as a similar idea or way of capturing their image, or directly in which they make work that is virtually a direct copy of someone else's work while trying to pass it off as their own and something brand new. An example of this is Sherrie Levine's "After Walker Evans" in which she essentially made a like for like copy of Walker Evans work from his "American Photographs". Many people di...

Portfolio Review

Portfolio Review 4:  • Uni vs Home life  Positives:  • Very clear images/ good quality  • Paints an image of their life at home an uni  Negatives:   • Quite bland colour pallet  • No set order so can be confusing to work out what represents what  1   Positives:  • Allows the viewer to almost make their own assumptions about what the photos are showing • Collective of images works well as it’s a full body of work rather than really jumpy between the images  Negatives:  • Very dark • Quite confusing as to what it’s about  • The borders take away the effect from the image.  3:  Positives:  • Effective way of presenting the images in the sleeves  • Sophisticated way of laying out the images trying all different ways to see what works well. • Beautiful and clear portraits of the subjects used  • Outfits are really eye catching in a lot of the full body portraits.  Negati...

My Website

With my website i decided to go with a stylish design that is prominent but still keeps class and an aesthetic throughout. I tried out a variety of different website builder sites (Squarespace, Wix, GoDaddy, Weebly) However, after careful consideration and what worked best for me, i stuck with Wix. This was mainly due to cost of the website, ease of use and also the options that were available to me to not only improve the look of my website but also functionality and also collating a domain name. But, with all the payment plans available Wix doesn't force you to pay for your website until you are satisfied and want to have a professional look for everybody to see. However, you can post your website without paying but Wix put a couple of ad banners in places. In my opinion i felt that i'm not ready to promote myself on a website i have payed for because i haven't gained enough worthy experience to want to pay for the site. So for now i have the ads on the site but would obv...
